Numérique responsable et sobriété

  • Thematic axes
    • What criteria, indicators and orders of magnitude can be used to compare technological options (including or excluding AI), taking into account the entire life cycle of digital infrastructure, equipment and services?
    • How can digital systems be designed to reduce computing costs, hardware requirements and energy consumption, while maintaining an appropriate level of service?
    • What levers for deployment and governance of digital uses can be used to limit unjustified generalisations, target high value-added uses and contain rebound effects?
    • To what extent can AI be made compatible with energy and material efficiency objectives? Also, in which cases should limits be explicitly set, or certain technological solutions abandoned?
    • How can the above trade-offs (technological and environmental) be integrated into the training of future engineers?
Responsible digital technology and moderation: defining what is strictly necessary in terms of technology in light of its environmental impact

The main objective of the round table is to discuss the following question: how can we determine, for a given digital service, what is either ‘necessary’, ‘useful but dispensable’, or ‘to be avoided’ in terms of environmental impact and resource constraints?

The round table will seek to clarify the following issues: trade-offs (by discussing relevant indicators and orders of magnitude applicable to the life cycle – use, manufacturing, energy, carbon), mechanisms of dependency and rebound effects, as well as technical and organisational levers for action.
